Avionics

Magellan’s heritage in the design, fabrication, integration, and testing of satellite subsystem equipment traces back to the Power Switching Unit (PSU) and the Command Decoder Unit (CDU) developed for the Hermes/CTS satellite that launched in 1976.

Today, Magellan’s flight-proven satellite subsystem equipment can be found on several Earth orbiting satellites as well as a deep space exploration mission.

Command and Data Handling (C&DH)

Flight-Proven Command and Data Handling Solutions for Diverse Spacecraft Mission Needs

Our compact, PCI-based computer system is developed and flight-proven for reliable and flexible spacecraft command and data handling. A dual-string architectural design consists of an operational unit and a cold spare so if a fault occurs, the unit manager switches over to the redundant string. The baseline unit has eight cPCI slots and is capable of accommodating customer-designed cards for specific mission requirements.

Product Details:

  • Customizable processor (baseline PowerPCTM 750FX)
  • 2.0 GB of mass memory (includes EDAC)
  • 2.0 MB of essential bus memory and status log
  •  34 W average power consumption
  • Command decoding rates up to 5 Mbps
  • Downlink data rates up to 8 Mbps
  • CCSDS compliant
  • 0.98 reliability for 2 years
  • Flight heritage: CASSIOPE, RADARSAT Constellation, Undisclosed Customer (1)

Power Distribution Control Unit (PDCU)

Scalable PCDU solutions for any mission requirement

With an innovative “by the slice” design, customers can tailor PCDU functionality by choosing only the mission-specific functionality and level of redundancy required, thereby optimizing mass, power, and volume. Magellan’s scalable PCDU can meet a wide range of mission requirements from government flagship-class spacecraft to commercial megaconstellations, providing output power from 100 W up to 3 kW.

Details:

  • Power output from 100 W up to 3 kW
  • Customer-defined card complement (controller cards, switch cards, solar array cards, propulsion/pyrotechnics cards, battery cards)
  • Input voltage: 28±6 VDCFlight heritage: RADARSAT Constellation, Undisclosed Customers (2)

Magellan FPGA-RPP (FPGA-based Reconfigurable Processing Platform)

Reconfigurable, High-Performance, Radiation Hardened

Developed with the support of the Canadian Space Agency, the Magellan FPGA-RPP is designed for the challenging radiation environments of highly elliptical and geostationary orbits, Lagrange points and deep space interplanetary missions. Its innovative architecture allows for the correction of radiation-induced single event upsets (SEU) while integrated automatic fault detection migrates tasks to the other processor without a reboot. Hardware is highly supportive of multi-core symmetric or asymmetric multiprocessing (SMP or AMP) or single core applications.

  • Details:

  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a 100 krad (Si) TID environment
  • Can mitigate upsets caused by LET up to 40 MeV·cm2/mg.
  • Mass: 0.84 kg
  • Power Consumption: 17 W (average)
  • Dimensions (L×W): 23 × 16 cm (excluding connectors)
  • Customizable Processing Core (baseline Gaisler LEON3)
  • I/O Interfaces: cPCI, Micro-D, D-Sub, Spacewire
  • Read/Write Throughput: Up to 4.3 Gbps
  • Technology Readiness: TRL 5
